Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I go to the dentist?

We recommend that you come to our office every six months for regular appointments unless otherwise recommended by Dr. Hausten. At your biannual checkup, we’ll perform an examination of your oral health and clean your teeth to make sure they’re completely clear of plaque and bacteria.

Some patients only go to the dentist if they have a problem, but the focus should be on preventative dentistry. Even if you take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing daily, it’s easy to miss areas between teeth and under the gumline. Plaque can harden into a material called tartar, which is nearly impossible to remove on your own. Tartar can buildup and lead to cavities and gum disease, so it’s crucial to come in for regular cleanings

What questions should I ask a new dentist?

Prior to scheduling an appointment with your new dentist, it’s helpful to schedule a consultation so you can get to know the practitioner and see if they’re a good fit.

Some important questions to ask your new or prospective dentist are:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • What dental technology do you use?
  • How do you treat patients with dental anxiety?
  • Do you stay up to date with the most recent dental techniques?
  • What emergency treatments do you provide?
  • Does your office offer any payment plans?
  • What insurance plans does your office accept?
  • What services do you offer?

It’s important that you find a dentist who can meet your needs and address your concerns. You’ll also want to find a dentist that’s close to your preferred location and is in your insurance network. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our office by calling (630) 653-3440. We’re happy to explain the services we offer.

What is fluoride and why is it important to dental health?

Fluoride is a mineral that fights bacteria and plaque, which eat away at your tooth enamel, thereby preventing cavities. While our bodies naturally make fluoride, it’s also in certain kinds of toothpaste and some mouthwashes.

Since fluoride helps to protect against cavities, we recommend using dental products that contain fluoride as part of your oral care routine. We also offer professional fluoride treatments that are highly concentrated and only take a few minutes to apply.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

To determine if you’re a candidate for dental implants, it’s best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hausten by calling (630) 653-3440. During the consultation, she’ll examine your oral health and provide a customized treatment plan to meet your needs.

The best candidates have good overall health and have sufficient bone density. We want your smile to make you feel confident and comfortable. If you suffer from tooth loss, give us a call and we’ll help find the treatment that’s best for you.
