Is the veneers procedure painful?

No, the veneers process isn’t painful. Prior to the treatment, Dr. Hausten will apply a local anesthetic to numb your teeth and gums. You may experience some discomfort following the procedure while you adjust to your new smile. Any pain should be minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and by applying a cold compress.

What if my veneer falls off or is damaged?

If your veneer falls off, call our Wheaton office immediately at (630) 653-3440 to let us know. We’ll schedule an appointment for you as soon as possible and make your smile beautiful again by fixing your veneer or recommending a new one.

In the meantime, put your veneer in a small container to keep it safe so you can bring it to your appointment for re-application and avoid trying to re-apply it on your own as this typically causes more problems. Dr. Hausten will either re-attach the veneer or suggest a new set if it’s time.

Are veneers permanent?

While veneers are made of highly durable material, they aren’t permanent. They typically last about 10 years. With proper care and biannual visits to our Winnetka location, we can improve the longevity of your pearly porcelain veneers.

In addition to scheduling regular checkups and professional cleanings at our office, there are a few ways you can improve the lifespan of your veneers, including:

  • Address any issues with teeth grinding
  • Avoid smoking
  • Refrain from eating food and beverages that are known to stain
  • Brush twice a day, floss daily, and rinse between meals

During your checkups, we’ll examine your oral health and the condition of your veneers. During this time, we may also recommend a new set.

Are there any aftercare instructions following veneers treatment?

Following your veneers treatment, you’ll want to slowly incorporate new foods into your diet as you adjust to your new smile. After a few weeks, you can enjoy the foods you love without any restrictions unless specified by Dr. Hausten.

With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 15 years or longer. To get the most out of your treatment, we recommend following a few guidelines, including:

  • Avoid biting into hard foods such as carrots and apples
  • Refrain from consuming foods and beverages that are known to cause staining such as red wine and coffee
  • Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and rinse between meals
  • Address any issues with teeth grinding
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools
  • Wear a mouthguard
